Waxing is in fact a method of plucking, albeit a bit less selective.

How old was your daughter when she commented on your face being prickly?

Indeed. There tends to come a point, however, especially after the drop in estrogen after the menopause, when the growth of facial hair coarsens and becomes more masculine. And it can often get to the stage where it's so coarse that plucking and waxing no longer work -- it just won't pull out. Shaving is often the only practical option left.
