Specific Mineral Deficiency Related to Stroke Incidence


A new study correlated dietary intake and serum levels of a specific mineral to the incidence of ischemic stroke.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and it is estimated that 5.4 million Americans have suffered a stroke. Strokes are a type of cardiovascular disease that adversely affects the arteries leading to the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is blocked by a clot or bursts, resulting in lack of oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a substantial number of adults in the United States do not get the recommended amount of magnesium in their diets. In this study, 14,221 men and women between the ages of 45 and 64 years were evaluated for correlations between dietary magnesium intake and measured serum magnesium levels.
