Blueberries and Type 2 Diabetes
Recently I was reading how eating blueberries daily (not just any blueberries but wild blueberries or organically grown ones) can help lower blood sugar. So I started googling and here, in a nutshell, is what I came up with:
From "Science Daily"---Blueberries contain high levels of phytochemicals (naturally occuring antioxidants). In studies, rats bred to be severely overweight were given freeze-dried blueberry powder mixed into their low-fat food. The freeze-dried blueberries consisted of 2% of their daily diet. (The trick is that one has to eat a low-fat diet to get maximum benefits.)
After 90 days, the rats had less abdominal fat, lower triglycerides, improved fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity. Also, they had lower body weight, lower fat mass and reduced liver mass.
From what I've also found out from my googling, taking blueberry leaf extract (one capsule 3 times a day) also provides the same benefits.
I order all my herbs from Swanson. Since we're going on vacation next week, I plan to order some blueberry leaf extract when we return. Also, I like eating blueberries in general and now that blueberry season is just about upon us, I plan to buy some organic ones.
One website that discussed the issue of blueberries for Type 2 Diabetes suggested that one should eat a serving of fruit 3 times a day. From what I can find, a serving size of blueberries is 1 cup. So...I'm guessing that one should eat 3 cups of organic/wild blueberries a day? While I really like blueberries, that seems like a lot plus it could get expensive!
So...I've concluded that I will take blueberry leaf extract and aim to eat some fresh blueberries each day, when possible.
I'd appreciate any thoughts on all of this. Thank you!
