Effects of Surface Active Agents on The Intestinal Ecosystem

HelloValerie. Dushen once said -that he rarely sees a debate where, both parties end up thinking alike. I want to start off by mentioning this, because this is a support forum, and I do not wish to engage in a debate.  I don’t expect you to agree with me either; that’s not my goal.  I’m simply stating my opinions based on fact and experience.  You asked me if I have clinical studies- backing up my claim, that soapsuds/ detergent-enemas can compromise your health – lead to cancer. Well, I do have some scientific data proving my point, but there is probably an equal amount of data out there that may say other-wise. Because you were so polit and persistent, I have taken the time to gather this data for you. I feel that it will help you understand where I'm coming from. If you have questions after reading this post, feel free to email me any time, and Valarie,  I think it’s only fair to tell you, that I’m working on my PhD in naturopathy, and my husband is a Biologist. We both have used soap/ detergents in lab experiments in order to gain access to organelles-insides of cells. We both agree, that by adding detergents/ soap to enemas, the colon is damaged as they destroy the epithelial cell wall, mucosa membrane and disturb the homeostatic ecosystem within; that has to count for something.

You may know some of this, but I would like to go over some basics.  An aspect of our defense system, one which a lot of people over look- is the gut; it can be split into three parts: the gut flora, the gut mucosa and epithelium-all are related to the immune system. If for -what-ever reason, this healthy balance is damaged, disease can set in. Soapsuds/ detergent enemas destroy epithelial cells and the mucosa layers within the colon. Friendly floral live within the mucosa and between the epithelial cells. Friendly floral called lactobacillus is your fermenting bacteria, and these live in the mucosa.  If you are destroying your mucosa, you are also destroying the bacteria responsible for preventing your food from rotting.  Eachtime you insert detergents into the colon; the intestinal defense system is compromised and can lead to diseases- even cancer.

Soaps, Detergents & Basic Cell Orientation:

Epithelial cells are found on every surface area of our body; they are an important biologicaly, because can be  permeable to the'wrong'compound. Surface active agents permeate and can damage our epithelial cells; these surface active agents are hidden under a few different names: soaps, detergents, conditioners, emulsifiers and solvents. They can hurt us by disrupting and modifying our cells.  I will use the words soap and detergent interchangeably through-out this post, however, you can apply this information to all the other forms of surface acting agents.

According to Kathleen Talaro, Foundationsin MicroBiology, [342] “ All detergents,  have a general molecular structure that includes a long chain, hydrocarbon residue and a highly charged, or polar, group. Detergents operate by eliminating cellular surface tension.  This can have several effects, but chief among them is the disruption of the cell membrane and the loss of its selective permeability.”  Below, see figure2- is the basic cell and some organelles (inside cell). When scientists use detergents/ soapwith cells, they are trying to obtain the nucleolus, mitochondria, and other parts of the cell without damaging them. The soapsuds/ detergents strip away the fat.(Phospholipids bilyer) Please see figure1. The phospholipids bilayer is responsible for protecting the cell, allowing nutrients to pass in and out and to ward off bacteria and viruses.  So, when the phospholipids become damaged -by using soapsuds/ detergent enemas, you run the risk of cell mutations, cell damage, cell death, and diseases can setin.  Can you see how this might contribute to cancer?

Fig1 Phospholipid Bilayer                                                Fig 2 Basic Cell & its Organelles:

Epithelia & Mucosa Cell:

Digestion  allows for nutrients to be absorbed into the body by the blood. In order for nutrition to absorb into the blood, all our nutrients will need to go through epithelia cells found all over our intestines. Once our food is digested- broken down into smaller and smaller pieces, it's then separated into its basic form: aminoacids, monosaccharides, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Now, the body absorbs all of these nutrients as they pass through the epithelia cells.

There’re several layers to our intestinal track- among which are two mucosa layers. This is where our cells meet up with broken down nutrients.  This link HERE talks about the mucose:

“...Two layers of mucosa consists of epithelia and its base membrane and a thin layerof smooth muscle that can move locally. The lamina propria, by the way, carriesthe blood and lymph capillaries that will pick up nutrients from the interiorof the digestive tract. It also houses MALTlymph nodules (Peyer's patches).

Here is my scientific source #1! According to the quote found below- by M, Shmeltzer, soapsuds enemas cause epithelium loss. I have underlined- and placed in bold letters, the text connecting soapsuds/ detergent enema and the destruction of epithelia cells within our colon. If you are destroying your intestinal cells -by using detergents, how can you absorb your nutrients? While the colon is not primarily responsible for nutrient uptake, it still has its roll. For example, Sodium Chloride still needs to be absorbed. Also, enzymes produced only in the colon are capable of digesting many molecules that the small intestine can not. You need functioning epithelia cells for this to occur.

Soapsudsand tap water enemas  produced significantly greater returns thanpolyethylene glycol electrolyte  solution (PEG-ES) and were also moreuncomfortable. Rectal biopsies showed  surface  epithelium loss after soapsuds but not after PEG-ES enemas. Further research is needed to determine the mechanism for the surface epithelium damage and to determine if thisdamage  produces a stronger defecation stimulus and discomfort.

Friendly Floral:

What exactly does friendly floral or probiotics mean anyway? The term 'probiotic' comes from the Greeks.Yeah, all the funny words come from the Greeks. It means ‘for life’- a mono- or mixed culture of living microorganisms.  Here is some great information: the state of balance within the GI tract is called"eubiosis". I love that word! On the flipside-the imbalance is called "dysbiosis". Flora balance requires beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria-in abundance. Part of our immune system- this presents a barrier and protects us from invading organisms. What is normal? Somewhere around 90% of  the intestinal friendly flora- in a healthy person-should be good bacteria  and around 15% should be bad bacteria. The greater the imbalance is, the greater the chances of disease setting in.

Also as part of  the immune system: friendly floral creates a nice healthy microbial fermentation, that takes place in the colon.  All those little microbes can produce enzymes capable of digesting molecules that the small intestine can’t. Scientific evidence 2: mentioned below, by Harden Tedesco, you will see, that mucosa is damaged by enemas containing  detergents. Soapsuds/ detergent enemas destroy the mucosa membrane and friendly floral. As a result, food will become ROTTEN instead of properly fermenting. Rotten food will fill your entire body with toxins; this leads to all sorts of debilitating illnesses. Mentioned somewhere on this page, while the small  intestines absorbs about 90% of your food’s nutrients, the large  intestines absorb all the nutrients from friendly bacteria (Good bacteria create non essential nutrients) and a few other chemicals such as chloride and sodium- are all very important. This is all compromised by inserting detergents into the colon.

Colonization Resistance & Barrier  Effect:

defined as indigenous bacterial that competes to kill down pathogenic bacteria-part of the immune system. I’m sure you know all this, but I will mention it anyway. These are some basic and common names for probiotics and are used interchangeably.‘Friendly floral’, ‘beneficial’ or‘healthy’ bacteria; also, here are more examples:  lactic acid bacteria include Lactobacillus  acidophilus, L. casei, L. bulgaricus,L. plantarum,L.salivarius, L.  rhamnosus, L. reuteri. Bifidobacterium bifidum, B.longum, B. infantis and S.  thermophilus. This is very interesting! Now, Bifidobacteria  plays a key role in enhancing the resistance to the colonization of exogenous- a potentially pathogenic organisms. Bifidobacteria  should account for more than 90% of the total intestinal bacteria. Lactobacilli is especially important as it  is strictly fermentative, and it is found in the MUCOSA layers of the colon.  If you’re using detergent/soapsuds enemas, you are destroying the mucosa layer- where friendly floral live- deep inside, in and around. (remember the scientific evidence I provided above) Due to the destruction of  lactobacillus  (your fermenting bacteria) food will not properly  ferment- leading to purification and systemic toxic buildup.  Also, by using detergents/ soap with each enema, you’re allowing other –more dangerous pathogens to move in and take over.

As I mentioned above, friendly  floral can provide nutrients for the body; for example, L.  acidophilus and B.bifidus may produce B vitamins including  niacin, folic acid, biotin, and B6, as well as vitamin K.Again, In addition to providing the body with useful nutrients, probiotics inhibit pathogenic bacteria in the gut: See how they  form part of the body's defense system against pathogens and microorganisms? Friendly floral creates a symbiotic relationship with our entire body.  Furthermore, friendly floral secrete lactic and acetic acids, to decrease the pH of the gastro -intestinal tract which creates a less hospitable environment for pathogenic bacteria. According to Natren…friendly bacteria have been  shown to reduce levels of dangerous, carcinogen-forming enzymes in your gastrointestinal tract, as well as boost the function of your immune system.”Friendly floral secrete bacteriocins;  these are powerful natural antibiotics that kill undesirable bacteria, and according to  Home Care Group

”Bacteriainhibited byL.acidophilus include: Bacillussubtilis, B. cereus, B. stearothermophilus,Candida albicans, Clostridiumperfringens, Escheriacoli,  Klebsiellapneumoniae, L.bulgaricus, L.fermenti, L. helveticus,L. lactis,  L.leichmannii, L. plantarum, Proteusvulgaricus,Pseudomonasaeruginosa, P. fluorescens, Salmonella typhosa, S.schottmuelleri,Shigella dysenteriae, S.paradysenteriae,  S.paradysenteriae, Sarcinalutea, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus,Streptococcusfaecalis, S. lactis, Vibriocomma.”

Notice all the different kinds of illnesses that can develop if you don’t have a strong  intestinal ecosystem.  Can you see how the immune system can be compromised-allowing cancer to set in? Abnormal friendly floral, and according to gut bm journals, Irritable bowl disease stems from abnormal friendly floral. So if you are using soapsuds/ detergent enemas regularly, it could be that you’re opening yourself up to IBD.  While IBD can be cured, it can also lead to cancer. Probiotics and barrier function in colitis

“...For years, researchers have tried in vain  to identify a specific pathogen as the cause of these chronic  intestinal inflammatory disorders but the possibility that one or  more bacterial agents are responsible can not be ruled out. Considering the implications of a pathogen in IBD, as yet undiscovered due to  technical limitations, it was hypothesised that modulation of an  abnormal microflora in these patients by introducing high titres of"protective" bacteria might overwhelm the"aggressive"  strain(s) and inhibit its deleterious effects. On this basis,  probiotic treatment was proposed as a therapeutic approach.

precancerous lesions tumors  inhibited by friendly floral.

To present the consensus of these studies first, it appears that probiotics with or without prebiotics have an inhibitory effect on the development of aberrant crypts (pre cancerous lesions) and tumors in animal models. To  present the conclusion first,it appears from the studies that  probiotics with or without prebiotics have an inhibitory effect on  the development of aberrant crypts (precancerous lesions) and tumors in animal models. ..

Again, these links ( ONE & TWO  )
provide  full articles indicating that  friendly floral and a healthy digestive ecosystem inhibits cancer. If  we do not continually expose our body to friendly floral killing agents, then we would not have to supplement with probiotics.

Scientific Evidence #3
INTESTINAL ECOSYSTEM:

“The 25-35foot long GI tract of an adult human is estimated to harbor about 100 trillion viable bacteria. This is approximately10 times the total number of cells in the human body. These live bacteria account for around 2 lbs of a body's weight and are known as intestinal or gutf lora. Viruses, fungi and protozoa can also be present, but these normally formonly a minor component of the total resident population of microorganisms in healthy individuals.

The density of micro organisms in the gut flora increases dramatically from10-1,000CFU/ml in the stomach to10-100billionCFU/gm in the large intestine(1)and these belong to as many as 500 different species, and anaerobic bacteriaout number aerobic bacteria by a factorof 1000:1. Anaerobic flora is dominated by Bacteroide sspp.,bifidobacteria, propioni bacteria and clostridia. Among aerobicand anaerobic bacteria enterobacteria, mainly E.coli, and enterococci predominate.

Bacteria have been estimated to constitute35-50%of the volume of the contents in the human colon. They profoundly influence nutritional, physiologic and protective processes. Both directand indirect defensive functions are provided by the normal microbiota.Specifically, gut bacteria directly prevent colonization by pathogenic organisms by competing for essential nutrients or for epithelial attachmentsites... [Valerie,  if you damage these cells, then what will the bacteria attach to?] By producing antimicrobial compounds, volatile fatty acids, and chemically modified bileacids, indigenous gut bacteria also create a local environment that is generally unfavorable for the growth of entericpathogens. This phenomenon is called Colonization Resistance, which can be defined as the ability of microorganisms belonging to the normal gut microflorato impede the implantation of pathogens. This function of the microflora is also known as the barrier effect. While probiotic bacteria improve colonization resistance, consensus thinking is that the importanceof lactic acid bacteria asprobiotic agents lies more in the in direct mechanisms such as immuno modulation.“

Friendly Floral & Immunity Diagram #1

Diagram1: " The intestinal flora, present mainly in the colon, forms a natural barrier to pathogens. The intestinal immune system comprises cells disseminated beneath the epithelium and also between epithelial cells. Lymphocytes are also found within more organised structures, lymphoid follicles, with a central region of B lymphocytes and a lateral region of T lymphocytes. Above these structures, we find M cells, which are specialised in transporting particles to the follicle. These areas of the intestine are known as Peyer'spatches. When a lymphocyte is activated by a dendritic cell presenting an antigen, it leaves the mucosa in lymph and enters the blood stream via the thoracic canal. This activated lymphocyte then colonises either the same mucosa or other mucosal effector sites.”

Recommendations:

It’s important to take safety measures and learn a little about our anatomy and physiology before starting an enema protocol. The tissue of the colon is very sensitive, absorptive, filled with living microorganisms and is part of our defens sesystem.  Because of these factors, it’s important to only use quality solutions for stimulation.  I recommend using 1 teaspoon of sea salt per quart of water to replace your electrolytes, and use friendly floral after each enema protocol. In order to take safe enemas, you must start with safe water, because it’s best for cleaning the colon. The sudden change in temperature facilitates the peristalsis, so by using warm water and simple non harsh recipes, you may remove old fecal mater and heal your colon.  Do not use soap/ detergent based enemas. I highly recommend using curezone protocols to meet your colon cleansing need as they actually build the colon’s natural floral and help to rebuild the colon wall and promote regularity; they do not damage the cells, mucosa or friendly floral. It’s good all-round.

"OliveOil/Aloe Vera: This is my favorite recipe. In an enema bag, pour onecup of organic olive oil and one cup of organic aloe vera juice. Open four MSM capsules and mix with liquid. Slowly pour into colon with enema bag. Hold as long as you are able. This will soothe the intestinal lining during inflammation as well as clean thecolon. Flaxseed Oil can be used inplace of the Olive Oil but will beless soothing and more directed towards eliminating candida infestations."

"Slippery Elm:In a blender, mix 4 cups water with one tablespoon of slippery elmpowder. Blend and strain. Addto enema bag or bucket. This mixture is reported to neutralize an acid colon and absorb foul gases. It may be good for colitis, diarrhea and hemorrhoids."

"Acidophilus/Bifidus These two probiotics are excellent healthy bacteria for balancing intestinal flora. Put 1 teaspoon in 2 cups of water or aloe vera juice and hold the mixture foras long as you can. It is great to do this procedure after a colonic."
