Re: Intelligent Design (The Debate Continued)
If you believe in I.D., but not the Bible, then what are we here for?
You are starting to remind me of someone I know very well. We are both Christians but we have a very different way of looking at things. It has been my error to admit that I am a Christian on this forum. Even though this is a debate forum, I once thought that etiquette should be a little bit different around here. I realize now that I was wrong. I thought of this place as more of a dojo where I could spar people like Corinthian. I do believe it is good to keep somewhat of a skeptical bent of mind in order to help keep my own perspectives in check and therefore, I do place some of my thoughts here on the debate forums.
You could be a Muslim or a Hindu and also be a proponent of I.D.
Back to this person you remind me of. One of the things he stated is that if part of the Bible is in error, then you have to throw the whole thing away. This is what I call operating out of a belief structure that reality doesn't operate under. How could a single error in the old testament negate what Jesus did??? On the other hand, you will never ever ever ever hear an evolutionist threaten to throw their science away because of something they couldn't explain about it.
You see Beej, it is not that I am telling you that you are wrong, the answer to part of the mystery is that Moses and the people of his time didn't have the same conceptual framework taught to us by our modern education systems. They especially didn't have a scientific bent of mind. Why would I say this? One clue is when God told Adam that if he ate that fruit, then he would surely die. But Adam didn't die in the way we know it. He lived for another 900 years. This is not a mistake. This is a sort of symbolism that is calling us to seek deeper meanings.
You see the truth was being conveyed by Moses in the best of his ability. It was a truth without the perspective that us moderns use. God didn't seem to have the need to dazzle the people of that time with metascientific truth.
I mean, what's in it for our creator(s)? Where did they go and why?
I believe that I.D. gives a person more of a liberated perspective in order to explore the intentions of our creator. At the same time, I believe I should exercise caution.
At least the Bible tells us why we're here and what to expect.
