Re: My fasting blog

I think it's a great blog. You tackled the eating disorder issue very well and I especially agree with this point:

4. Are you fasting to lose weight? The answer is NO, fasting is not a way to lose weight! Will you lose weight? Yes of course you will lose weight but it's not a good idea for long term weight loss. I will say this about weight loss and fasting. When you do a long term fast you can get rid of the cravings for the wrong type of food that might have made you over weight in the first place. But as a weight loss tool maybe not such a good idea.

My first fast was for 27 days and it's effect were to make me crave fresh healthy food. Later I found that my weight loss actually came from my eating sessions rather than the fasting. I posted a discussion topic here. Sure it feels good when the weigh flies off, but a lot of it is an illusion, your body slows down and much of the weight loss is from water nutrients etc that need to be replaced when you end the fast. And if you eat the same food after the fast (as many people with food cravings do), then you'll be worse off in the long run.

This too I find interesting:

40% of everything you do has to do with food. Thinking of food, making of food, eating the food, buying the food, digesting the food etc..... Digestion is a big one. Our body devotes a lot of energy to the digestion of food. When you fast that all stops. So if 40% of everything you do (brain included) just stops lots can happen. Now I am certainly not saying that almost half of all brain functions are devoted to eating but I am saying 40% in the big picture. So with the extra time, your brain starts to think. Lots of things start to pop into your mind. Some bad but mostly good. I have heard about wives leaving their husbands after a long term fast because the brain finely has the time to do the thinking it needs to do.

This can be scary. Memories that were forgotten come back. Feelings that were suppressed come back with a vengeance.

But when the fast ends you get a better understanding of everything around you and yourself.

I experienced that, I never thought of it in that way. You have motivated me to do another fast for a good spiritual clean out, but I will choose a time and place where I get the most out of it, and it will probably be AFTER I have finished my weight loss and when my body is n good shape and well nourished.

Good luck on your journey, and as you are posting in a water fast support forum I don't think anyone here will think you are crazy! Smile
