Aromatherapy Oil Safety
Most Essential oils are concentrated oils expressed from leaves, petals and roots etc. Essential oils have been used for healing and beauty treatments for many hundreds of years. For health and safety reasons, you should follow the following guidelines when using Essential oils on the skin.
Seek advice from a GP or qualified Aromatherapy practitioner before use. All essential oils are from natural plants, therefore, there is a possibility they could cause an allergic reaction.
Avoid using undiluted essential oils directly on your skin. Essential oils are very concentrated; so should be mixed with a carrier oil before using directly on the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas of the skin. If you experience any uncomfortable sensations then rinse the area well with plenty of water.
Essential oils are for external use only. They should never be taken internally.
Some types of essential oil, such as grape oil and lemon oil etc. are photosensitive and can cause sunburn if exposed to the sun. Essential oils will normally be excreted from the skin in four to six hours so exposure to the sun should be kept to a minimum during this time.
You should always seek advice if you are pregnant. The use of lavender oil, cinnamon, sandalwood, grape oil and rosemary etc. are not suitable for use if you are pregnant. Also, if you are breast feeding, you should consult your doctor or a professional Aromatherapist.
Essential oil are volatilize products, so make sure they are kept away from fire.
Some essential oils should not be used on children, especially under 3 years old. melissa, clove oil, peppermint, fennel oil and thyme are among those not to be used on children.
If in any doubt it is always best to seek professional advice.
