MMR-Autism Study Findings Were Fixed

For nearly a decade, parents have questioned the safety of the MMR vaccine due to a 1999 study by Dr. Andrew Wakefield which found a connection between the vaccine and autism. On February 8, 2009, England-based newspaper London Times confirmed that the scientist behind the study fixed much of the data to create a correlation.

As reported by the London Times, confidential medical documents and interviews with witnesses have established that Andrew Wakefield manipulated patients’ data, which triggered fears that the MMR triple vaccine to protect against measles, mumps and rubella was linked to the condition. Since the release of Dr. Wakefield’s data, the international Science community has worked to confirm the study’s findings to no avail. As reported in the New York Times, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the Institute of Medicine, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all largely dismissed the notion that thimerosal causes or contributes to autism. Five major studies have found no link. [ http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/25/science/25autism.html?pagewanted=1&_r=].
