I have been a teacher in alternative education areas for nearly ten years. I have taught all kinds of children and adults. I believe the person who feels invited to the table is the one who learns best and achieves the most. It has little to do with one's race, religion, national origin, gender,disability, sexual orientation, or age. Those that feel invited will rise up to their expectation. The eugenics movement was a left handed way to un-invite those who were not white from the opportunities that whites generally have.

The prison system is a particularly obvious eugenics tool that takes away the fathers of black children. 85% of prisons in Texas are filled with black males. Even with a majority of their fathers on probation or parole by the time they are 21, I have found that that young black children living in poverty are just as hopeful as their white peers. They are just as excited to learn and are capable of anything. Their mother's lack of education begins to have an impact on them though and by 10-12 years of age, that enthusiasm is replaced by the full knowledge that they are not valued by America. It is not about IQ but rather the level of education and the level of expectation for success that the parents have that determines the success of their children.

If you do not feel invited to the table, you will not likely come. Black women were invited to participate in American society, post civil rights, and have made many gains but black males are no less discriminated against today than they were pre-civil rights. A felony conviction has the same effect as sundown racism had and continues to have for many black families. The same crime that a white young adult does is rewarded with a much less harsh sentence than that of a black or hispanic child who commits that same crime. It is a deliberate racism that divides and conquers black and hispanic children from their fathers. By the time the poor children in grinding poverty and a lack of fathers reach about 5th grade, it becomes clear that America has targeted blacks and hispanics as their lower caste. Those with fathers will do better and achieve more than their peers. Whites lose a lot of fathers as well but because of whites have access to higher education and better jobs, they pay higher amounts of child support and the poverty effect is somewhat diminished. Fathers in their childrens' lives or an educated and financially stable mother to me are much more of a determinant of success than race.

We learn what we believe will help us in our lives. Why waste our energy focusing on useless information? If they believe they will not be asked to be literate, know math or science, so it is for them. Girls actually do better at math and Science until they come to understand that they are not wanted in that field and most stay away from engineering and science. It has nothing to do with IQ. Working with children who have the same resources, education, parenting, and access to future employment combined with believing they are invited to the table, all children will fare much better than those who are not. The eugenics movement is the clear racism of the last century but I would have hoped more for this one. Eugenics is discredited by Science over and over but brutes drag it out to give them a false sense of superiority they do not deserve. Civil Rights have helped black females rise from poverty but their fathers and husbands are still oppressed. I hope America will embrace a new idea and invite all of its children to table. Our future is hanging by a thread. It will take all of its people pulling each other up. It was really disappointing to me when I found that this place of healing was so backwards about race.
