Angel Food Ministries
I want to let everyone know about Angel Food Ministries.
My aunt and uncle are senior citizens in poor health living below the poverty line. They get food stamps, but with food prices soaring, they are having a hard time of it. Their church became an Angel Food Ministries host site. It has been such a blessing to not only my aunt and uncle, but to the whole community.
I researched the idea to see if it was something I could organize for my own church as an outreach ministry.
Here's the deal: For $30 you get a box of groceries that is supposed to feed a family of four for a week. I decided to buy the same exact groceries at my local HEB grocery store to see how the prices compare and to see if it really did feed a family of four for a week. I doubled the amount since I have to feed six "adults" every week. It didn't feed us for a week, but it certainly did help. There was no way I could buy what I did for $60.
Now, the food selection is pretty "institutional." Those of us who are into the truth movement may find the ConAgra and Monsanto logos a little hard to take. But in difficult times, it's food, OK? We're just trying to help people stay alive.
In the regular box, you get a LOT of meat. I was surprised that they even shipped meat (frozen), and also at the meat portions. My family is mostly vegetarian, so now we have meat in the freezer to share with others. :-)If you're a complete vegan, you're not going to like this food program. I realize that. But if you have neighbors going hungry, you might let them know about it.
There are also extra boxes you can order, if you order at least one regular box. I got extra produce- seasonal, great condition produce, although not organic. Again, I could not match the price of the box when I bought mine at HEB, even though these things were on sale. You can order a box of even MORE meat, for grilling, etc. I noticed a sausage and cheese box option for holiday gift giving. There was a Thanksgiving dinner for 4 box. I see there is a Christmas meal for 4 box for December. Each of the boxes run about $30.
You don't have to be on food stamps, although Angel Food does accept them. You don't have to be under a certain income. You do have to be a US citizen or have a green card. Some people buy these boxes of food to give to others in need who don't even have the $30 to spare.
Angel Food Ministries "gives back" a dollar for every box purchased to the host site for their benevelence fund or ministry. They also stick a little magazine in each box that has an inspiring message and the plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.
I am thinking seriously about volunteering with Angel Food Ministries at a church near me. I want to see how it goes, and if it seems like a real ministry opportunity, I am going to ask my church elders to consider becoming a host site.
With the economy going into the tank and the risk of the USG going bankrupt, who do we think will feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless?
Here's the link to the website. I hope it blesses someone.
