Read "The Way Of The Shaman" by Michael Harner. I was an early participant in one of his week long seminars with about 60 other people. Everyone who stuck with the training learned to journey during that week, so persistence pays off.
Harner said there were two traditions, the drum method and the psychotropic drug method. I have taught the drum method off and on for almost 30 years. Some people get it and some don't. I don't know why that is. Many who tried for awhile eventually learned to journey. The live drum beat is crucial in my opinion.

It's best to start with either a seminar or by joining a drumming circle. It is the animals and/or the guides found in shaman space who teach you the discipline. You learn the trails from other shamans, in my opinion.

Bob Dylan's advice “...Don't follow leaders, watch the parking meters...” is very applicable with shaman studies.
