Re: An interesting observation... Water purification

Hello Mike,

PH is an important consideration when using chlorine, but less so when using chlorine dioxide to purify water. Chlorine dioxide is very effective over a broad range of PH.

If the sodium chlorite is activated prior to adding it to the water to be purified, there is little concern about the PH of the water. However, if you are using unactivated sodium chlorite, then the PH of the water will play a part in how much chlorine dioxide is produced.

When adding sodium chlorite to water, only trace amounts of chlorine dioxide are produced. I don't have equipment sensitive enough to measure the actual amounts, so I don't know the magnitude of the differences with different water PH's. Bruce would be a better source for information on this.

Tom
