Doesn't solar power have a weak link, in that you have to use rechargeable batteries that eventually wear out? I am not a fan of batteries for long term SHTF scenarios. I don't know if you could run live power off a solar array and regulator to power something small, but it would probably be very large and expensive. Plus it takes a long time to charge.
I like direct energy sources, like the example of a tv directly powered by an exercise bike contraption. Or the Freeplay radios that use gearing and a wind up coil for power. I had an idea to use a heavy weight dropped from a rooftop or tree limb or tower, geared to fall very slowly and turn a small generator for a few hours maybe. Hoist it up with a pulley, converting a few minutes of labor into hours of stored energy. Plus you wouldn't have to rely on daylight for power.
