Re: mom=elevated liver enzymes=worried

those numbers aren't excessively high. of course it's better to be in range, but people with hepatitis etc. typically can have levels 5, 10 or more times higher than that.

my first guess would be that it's some pharmaceutical causing a mild elevation of the enzymes. if that's the cause, stopping all of them would reduce the enzymes back to normal probably within a day or two. asians typically have genetic polymorphisms of cytochrome enzymes to process drugs and other toxins, so like I said, that would be my first guess. nexium causes liver pain in me, and while i'm not asian, i have reduced cytochrome enzyme functioning from a chemical injury. of course the same goes for any herbal supplements, etc.

perhaps stress could cause a mild elevation, though I don't know that for sure. but with the increased catecholamines and other stress hormones released, i guess it's possible that with chronic stress it could put an extra load on the liver.

if the enzymes aren't back to normal after stopping the drugs, I would look to something in the diet. that could be anything, so what I usually do is reduce all foods down to a few basic things for a couple of days to try to reduce any possibility of something I'm eating causing problems: fats, certain kinds of fruits (grapefruit, etc.). then get the enzymes checked again and see if they're down.

if none of that works, i would contact dr. zhang, a hepatitis and liver specialist who has all kinds of herbs that he sells online through "hepapro" for liver problems (i have no financial interest whatsoever, i just have used the herbs and know they're good). and of course have your regular doctor monitor you.
