Re: TMAU testing imminent!
Hi 17924,
It's really nice to have a reply to my post!
I've already done the urine test, and am not sure that I did it right. I'm a vegetarian and don't eat fish (boy did that turn out to be a good decision!) so I had a milky frappe for my lunch the day before, followed by an egg sandwich on the train home and an omlette in the evening.
I then had another omlette thee hours before I did the test with no water (didn't want to excrete it) and some decaf coffee about half an hour before I did the test. Like you this made me dehydrated, so the urine was a pretty dark colour.
That makes me think the test might come back positive, but I'm worried because I'd been eating a low-choline diet about three days before the test, and the odor diminished to pretty much its lowest level the morning I did it. I'm now worried I accidentally created the worst possible conditions! Oh well, I definitely have the proper test scheduled in for shortly after I get the results of the urine test, so I guess it's not the end of the world if it shows up negative. I just want a positive soon so that the doctors believe me!!
I honestly have no idea if I have genetic TMAU - I'm kind of hoping I don't, so that I can avoid the awkward conversation with my sister where I have to tell her that she's a carrier. I just know that I can smell trimethylamine all the time. It's textbook.
I had already leapt to that conculsion about
Antibiotics by myself. It just seems counter-productive. When I did the low choline diet I still ate probiotic yoghurt, even though it's milk-based, and that didn't seem to do it any harm. I had to stop the diet because I threw up recently (improperly cooked egg whites - my own fault for being in a rush) but hope to go back on it soon. There is definitely something in it for me, although only starving myself makes the symptoms go away, so I guess that's not pratical in the long-term! Lol.
I hadn't thought about asking them to test for sulphur and ammonia. I'm kind of guessing I don't have serious ammonia issues, because I'd be dead by now, but still it is worth them testing for other things - especially if (like I'm hoping) I don't have genetic TMAU. (Did you have the blood test, btw?)
Oh well, I'll post my results when I get them, and I'll maybe eat and drink some naughty things for about three days before my test proper!
It was nice to hear from you - and good luck with your investigation too. I will share everything I find out here...
xx
