The Earth Battery, cool demo

did you know that the telegraph system in teh US was powered by tapping directly into the earth's electrical field? they used soemthing called an earth battery, which was just a copper sheet stuck into the ground connected by a wire to a zinc sheet stuck into the ground some distance away. thats it. this simple contraption captured the electrical energy generated by the earth and powered the telegraph system.
