Is it possible it's the carpet or something that was used to clean it? I say this because I had a co-worker who had a company professionally clean their carpets and whatever chemical was used caused a very bad reaction for the family. They were in that house 6 months and were constantly sick until they figured out what it was. (They ended up moving, but another option would have been to remove all the old carpet and install new or other flooring.)
