How do you improve blood circulation?

I have a dear friend who has been diagnosed with brain cancer and has undergone both radiation and chemotherapy. He is having trouble with his knees and ankles swelling up and causing him severe pain. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome to help improve his circulation and help reduce this swelling and inflammation.
