Colitus of hand/finger

My mother has had an infection on the tip of her index finger for over a year, 8 Doctors later they removed the tip of her finger. Now the rest of her finger is infected and turning black, she is now being told that she has colitus of the hand. What is this and can it be cured. I try to find information on several web sites but could not find anything.
