For the most therapeutic 'cayenne therapy', you'll be wanting tincture, powder or raw peppers in the 200,000 - 300,000 Scoville Heat Unit range - most folks can't eat a pepper that hot. With the tincture, there's NO lingering burn in the mouth (after 45 seconds to a couple of minutes, and because it goes through the lining of the stomach - because of the alcohol base - , there's no burning on the way out :) The powder burns a bit longer in the mouth (and definitely burns coming out, too), but nothing like the raw, because there's less of the natural oil. This is why folks can tolerate the high heat of the hottest peppers in the tincture/powder, but can't tolerate the raw.

Actual Cayenne peppers are only 40,000 HU (which is still very hot, raw, to most).

The best tinctures & powders are usually made with a 'base blend' of Habanero peppers (300,000+ HU) and African Bird Peppers (100,000-200,000 HU) plus assorted other 'hotties' to come up with a final product over 200,000 HU.

Of course, ANY cayenne is better than none. But if you're wanting to see the results you typically read about, go with the hot stuff.

Yep, it's on the pricey side, but if you do some internet searching, you'll find organic habanero powder selling for around $50 a pound...IF you can find it.
