Talk about events, the Mayan Calendar is scheduled to end December 21, 2012. What, if anything significant, does this mean? There is a vast array of theories and interpretations out there to pick from for some guidance...even some a bit new-agey. For instance, there are proponents who claim the end of the Mayan calendar will also coincide with the end of the world. Others contend that, yes, December 21, 2012 will most definitely be the the end of the world "as we know it", but rather than this being the event that ends time forever, instead the world will merely transition from a previous age into the next age the same way that has (theoretically) been occuring for many ages past and many ages yet to come.

Plus or minus the somewhat uncertain nature of these kinds of wide ranging, somewhat far-out interpretations and speculations to be found circling through the public consciousness, there seems to be at least some valid basis to the assertion that there once was a Mayan culture. There is said to be ample recorded history indicating this Native culture lived in the area that in the present era is referred to as "Central America". This civilization is recorded as having possessed highly devoloped architecture, art, written & spoken langauge, as well as sophisticated mathematics....and astronomy! These natives "Mayan" existed during a time that predated the eventual invasions by Europoids - itself said to have been spawned by that fateful "discovery" in 1492 but not begun in ernest until 1604. There is also (theoretically) an astrological component that ties in; specifically, Sidereal Astrology (not to be confused with Tropical Astrology). There are 12 ages "signs" making up this particular Zodiac, each lasting approximately 2000 years give or take, during which the Sun and Earth complete their particular cosmic dance of one revolving around the other with respect to these 12 signs . From a simple math perspective, each "age" lasts 30 degrees. 12 X 30 = 360 - a full circle, and the period required for one full cycle of this particular circle being drawn by the aforementioned dance is ....aproximately 24,000 years. This dance is one that occurs in reverse order "the procession of the Equinoxes". For instance, the previous transition (Aries to Pisces) is said to have occured - roughly, somewhere between the last century B.C. and the first or second century A.D. Some astrological theorists allege the present era (2007) exists near the end of the age of Pisces..... slowly moving towards the age of Acquarius. Remember some of that esoteric social engineering stuff prophecied by 60's era pop music, pop culture, 'Hair'... "the 5th Dimension"...'Changing Images of Man', etc? To add even a little more potential uncertainty to this, there are theorists who claim the transition from Pisces to Acquarius already occured. This belief is at least a bit consistent with some of that 60's era noise. Meanwhile, there are others who counter this with argument that the dawning of the age of Acquarius is still at least a few hundred years away.

What does any or all of this mean?; hard to say... maybe nothing significant... or not. For one trying to give due respect and or consideration to these kinds of theories... let alone trying to fathom some of them....all things considered, 2012 may be a really good time to be in attendance somewhere in the world.
