Re: Bipolar and Mirena-Should I swtich to Paragard?

hope_this_helps, several years ago I suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks. Even though my disorder is different than yours, my disorder was absolutely dormant until after I had Mirena put in.

I had Mirena inserted in September 07 and within 3 weeks of having it I suffered from a MAJOR panic attack and after that I never really felt like I was here. Like my head was in the clouds or even in a box. I couldn't grasp the fact that I was actually in existence when it all felt like a dream (these were just a couple of my symptoms....my list goes on and on - you can learn about my story from clicking on my name). I allowed months to go by for my condition to only worsen hoping that my body would "adjust" to Mirena. Well, it never did....

A little over 5 weeks ago I had Mirena removed. It was after numerous visits with my primary care and after I found a shrink to prescribe me 50mgs of zoloft a day (along with lorazepam and xanax as needed) and weekly visits to a therapist. The 3-4 weeks prior to removing Mirena were the worst in my life! I suffered from days long panic attacks, I wasn't sleeping, I wasn't eating, I was losing weight daily, and I was an emotional wreck!

I immediately went back on the pill, but most of my symptoms were not subsiding. It had become apparent to me that Mirena has made me sensitive to synthetic hormones and that my best chance for getting better is to go back to being natural. It took a couple of weeks to get past the continuous anxiety and constant worry, but now I am starting to finally feel a bit like "myself". I haven't taken the lorazepam or xanax in a few weeks, but will continue with the zoloft to help me through this mental hump.

I know our issues are different and it is ultimately your decision to make, but I hope that my story and many of the other women's stories on this forum will help you to realize that the Mirena can impact you mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Good luck and I wish you good mental health.

Deanna
