Self-help psychonutritional therapy
There seems to be an assumption that if we want to avoid medications for
Depression we need to work on our mind as the fundamental source of our negative thinking as the only alternative. There are alternative to drugs!!
We do not have to accept that the only way of treating an endogenous
Depression - which is caused basically by a biochemical abnormality and not because of an irrational mind - that we necessarily need to use or take drugs to "cure" the illness. Drugs do not "cure" illnesses but merely mask the symptoms of "mental illness" .
In fact, there is no such thing as a "mental illness". "Mental" is the adjective of the mind and hence "mental illness" is naturally understood (by psycho-linguistic mechanisms) as being an illness of the mind. But how can an abstract concept of the "mind" be ill. The flaw in our thinking is that we are confusing symptoms for causes. It is like confusing
Arthritis being the cause of the inflammation of of joints, or that coughing is the cause of respiratory inflammation.
The illness of the mind is simply a symptom of an underlying DISEASE that interferes with the production of serotonin (and other feel good neurotransmitters) in our body. If we want to treat
Depression we need to treat the cause of serotonin deficiency WITHOUT RECOURSE TO DRUGS!! The treatment of the medical illness underlying a mood disorder takes priority over consideration of "psychological" aspects.
How can that be done?
The clue is that ALL NEUROTRANSMITTERS WE PRODUCE ARE DERIVED FROM THE FOOD WE EAT!!!
Thus knowledge of Nutritional Medicine or Nutritional Biochemistry will help us to treat depression. This is the kind of medicine that is shunned by conventional medical practitioners, psychiatrists and psychologists, because 1) it is not taught at universities and 2) it would undermine the monopolistic practice of medicine based on patented and expensive drugs and "qualified psychotherapy". The mental health industry would collapse if illnesses could be treated without recourse to the sale of drugs and/or "talk therapy".
If you are prepared to study some of the basics of nutritional medicine, you will be empowered to help yourself to overcome perhaps 80 per cent of mood disorders through education. You can do most of your own therapy by yourself and if you fail then see a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or Nutritional Psychologist.
