I'm surprised at the placebo response too. Something is "off" in this study. Ghent and Eskin reported a high side effect rate. But they didn't know anything about iodine-related bromide detox then-- even tho salt loading for bromism had been around for 100 years. Ghent and Eskin thought they were dealing with "iodism."
