These may be useful tips, or not, but your mention of hookworms makes me wonder if some stuff I read this evening might help.
First was a mention that hookworms cause mucus...how, I don't know.
The second was opinions that mucus may be THE cause of malabsorption of nutrients.

Of course, that made me think of how the skin automatically 'balances' minerals in a bath or footbath of a 1% solution of Himalayan crystal salts. (If your doctor doesn't object to an ocean swim, for you.)

For iodine, I eat a little crumbled kelp on my food, daily...sometimes dulse, though it's a stronger taste.
I don't know the 'best' amount to eat.
