I've read through your dream a couple of times, and in addition to the things that you've already mentioned, a few things popped into my mind. The dirt and roots would certainly be a symbol of 'grounding'. Although as you describe digging in the dirt to reveal the roots of the tree, what comes to my mind is 'unearthing'. Only you would know how this might fit within your own life. Have you done any research on your family genealogy? Or could you be in the process of getting to the core of something in your psyche?

The other thing which your dream reminded me of was the children's book, Charlotte's Web. I suppose that I read or heard the story when I was a child, although I didn't remember it. And so I googled Charlotte's Web and went to Wiki for a review of the story line. Instead of my leading you to any conclusions that might not fit for you, I suggest that you take a look at what Wiki has to say about Charlotte's Web and see what you come up with.
