I had read that in the Middle East parasite eggs fly around everywhere on the sand, entering the nose, ears and eyes, hence the wearing of burkas, which everyone thinks are humilitating to women. Could be they were meant for protection.
I don't mean to make anyone angry here, just an alternative idea.
