Laura - I agree that mainstream medicine has it's place. For me, it's my alternative medicine. I'll only consider mainstream when safer and more effective natural solutions don't get the job done. And that's been very seldom.
The only case I think of is blood pressure. My doctor put me on 3 blood pressure medicines, a beta blocker and cholesterol medicine. I lasted one week before feeling seriously sick with side effects.
Through natural supplements, diet, exercize etc I was able to get off the beta blocker, cholesterol medicine and two of the thee blood pressure medicines. But try as I may I just can't get off that final blood pressure medication by finding a natural substitute (though I'm sure one exists).
But that's the only exception I can think of where the alternative of mainstream medicine had the better solution to any health problem for me personally. And of course if I obediently stayed on all the medications they prescribed, I'd be a very sick person right now.
