Cracked premolars on opposite sides upper jaw. Root canal, extraction or what alternatives are there?
A month ago my right upper premolar Canadian number 14(US #5) broke in half. I had hurt that tooth about 4 months ago by eating a pie crust but by treating with clove oil etc. I did not have any more pain until it broke into half. Since it was a clean break my dentist made the cavity a bit larger by doing laser into the gum and stuck the tooth back in there using clearfil se bond. He said that this may not stay for long but let us take a chance. He also said that I may have a lot of sensitivity for a few days with swollen jaw, if that persists then go back to him. Also, in future this tooth may become dead and if that occurs or the tooth breaks off again we will have to do a crown with cerec vita porcelaine (he has his own cerec lab and used Vita 3 or something. Well, since putting that tooth back I feel the pain when I am biting on a particular cusp. I have tried to eat soft food but even with that every time I eat I experience sensitivity at least once. It does not hurt otherwise.
The day the right premolar broke I felt the same pain when chewing on the left side on exactly the opposite upper left jaw, namely left premolar Canadian #24 (us #12).
Couple of days ago I revisited my dentist to let him know that I was having pain on the tooth he had glued back and also on the exact opposite premolar. He adjusted the bite on the right side. He checked the left premolar and told me that I had a crack in that tooth as well. He was surprised to see both perfectly healthy teeth (no cavities, etc.) having cracked. He also told me that he could see black underneath that cracked tooth. I asked him what that meant and he said bacteria. So I said what are my alternatives, he said root canals. I told him I did not want
root canals as I was afraid of doing it. My mouth at the moment has 11 cavities filled with composites (the same dentist had removed
Amalgam 9 years ago using Hal Huggins procedure) although I think there is a very very tiny bit left on my wisdom tooth. I have never had any crowns or
root canals and did not know those words until recently.
I asked him to take a panaromic xray. He checked and he said the rest of my bones and mouth looked healthy.
Even after he adjusted my bite I still have the same feeling of pain on both sides if I happen to chew on those teeth on a particular side. This again happens perhaps a couple of times each meal but I am very careful when I am eating and I am really afraid to eat hard or crusty food.
What are my options? In the last couple of weeks I have developed back ache below my shoulders on my spine (never suffered from back aches), perhaps from the stress of cracking two healthy teeth!! Or perhaps I have infection there?
Should I opt for
root canal and may be crown but these are very small teeth and if he does the crowns with cerec 3 porcelain will they not damage the bottom opposite teeth? Also would the
root canals and crows be detrimental to my health?
The dentist said that if I felt the pain other times than chewing and it lasted more than 5 minutes than I should go back to him and if I did not want root canals then I should have the teeth extracted, he would send me to a dental surgeon.
My concern is that if I get the pain when I am chewing am I hurting a nerve or something? It appears that both these premolars are connected in some ways as I had no pain in the left premolar until my right premolar broke. Should I do something right away and the fact that the dentist said he observed black in the left molar, does it mean I may have infection now which may get worse? I am at the moment applying Dr. Christophers tooth powder togther with extra comfrey powder to my mouth and those 2 teeth in particular 2 x a day. I am also worried that if the infection festers, since the teeth are in my upper jaw I do not want my brain or other areas to be affected. However, should I wait until I break either of those teeth or if the pain gets worse to make the decision…..
I had done oil pulling for two years very diligently but have stopped doing it in the last week as I feel it may have contributed to my teeth cracking. I have always taken very good care of my teeth.
What other alternatives are there to replace the missing teeth besides bridges? This may not be a good idea if my teeth are weak.
Could I have dentures or would it be okay to leave the gaps? I am not worried about how I look but would the gap create bite problems?
What types of dentures are out there? And since the two teeth have between them six teeth in front how would I attach those dentures?
If I have the teeth pulled, would I have to worry about caviations? I am in Toronto, Canada and I found only two dentists one in mississagua and one in Hamilton who do cavitations and I do not have transportation to get to them. Can I not go to a regular surgeon to have my teeth pulled out?
Sorry for the long post but I am extremely worried about this now. I just want to make the right decision before things get worse…
Thank you very much for any suggestions..
