I can attest to the "joys" of packing a wound with cayenne. Last year a cat ripped my hand open from the palm to the top of my pinky, blood everywhere, I packed it with cayenne and kept it wrapped for about a week. It stopped the bleeding and no infection. There is a scar, but it's not that bad. MH's Brenda even walked me through it on the phone.
