hair loss & fasting = telogen effluvium
i know!! weird huh, you would certainly think so!
since i always exercise my right to be informed ;) i have read tons of stuff - theories ranging from ketosis inducing hair loss (lots of people on atkins seem to experience it), thyroid & other hormonal imbalances, anaemia & iron/iodine deficiencies blah blah. i even read about fasting causing a dramatic increase in the release of human growth hormone which is said to have a hugely beneficial effect on hair loss related to male pattern baldness...!
i vaguely remembered reading something by dr joel furhmann about fasting and hair loss and i finally found it today...
Joel Fuhrman, M.D.
‘Hair loss after fasting is not uncommon, it even has a medical name called Telogen Effluvium. Telogen Effluvium results from the conversion of a large number on anagen (active) hairs to telogen (resting) hairs, with subsequent shedding. It is usually observed 1 to 4 months after a precipitating event but may occur up to 8 months later. Typically less than 50% of hair is lost and be noticed only by the person suffering with it. Many drugs can cause this, but it also can be precipitated by rapid weight loss, fasting, surgery, childbirth, illness, infection and psychological stress. No treatment is necessary for this self-limiting disorder, although the duration varies form 6 to 12 months. Hair regrowth is always complete’.
here is a link to more info on telogen effluvium (hair shedding) - it's almost identical to the picture i posted this morning!
http://dermnetnz.org/hair-nails-sweat/telogen-effluvium.html
i also have the beau's line ridges on a couple of nails on the right hand (i hadn't really noticed them before i found that link!)
this corresponds with everything that the natural hygienic/fasting doctor told me.
so, since the case is now closed, this is the last mention i shall make of my hair loss! (except about my remedy success which i will post in a few months). i'm just gonna suck it up and prepare for my next fast!
thanks justaquestion
