Hiccups!

Doc- My husband has been getting the hiccups for the last 2 days- he was miserable last night- and kept he and I both awake. He said he's been having them all day today, and I can hear him in there right now with them--

We can try all the things we've heard helps, but what is causing them to continue like this? And is there a way to stop them that you know of? It's the diaphram right?
