RE: MGUS PREVENTATIVE MEASURES. Resonse to Dottie
Dear Dottie
I'm grateful to have found this forum and all the interesting approaches to the prevention of MM when MGUS has been diagnosed. I totally agree with you about "why wait" as the Dr's say, when there are obviously things you can do NOW to prevent the MM that a % of people may be diagnosed with later in life.
I found out totally by accident, when working as a lab tech that I have MGUS. I was doing correlation studies on a new analyzer in my lab. I volunteered my own blood to check the proficiency, etc and discovered my IgM was elevated (over 900 mg/dl). Since then (over 2 years now) I have closely followed the protocol with regular SPEP's (M-spike) and 24 urine protein (normal). The IgM consistently stays over 1000 with no change in the M-spike on the electrophoresis. No bone marrow biopsy has been done, however a few "plasma cells" have been found during a manual differential of my CBC. I was 47 at the time of this discovery.
The hematologist told me that about 5% of MGUS will eventually go on to become MM or waldenstrom;s macroglobulemia. I also found it odd that my ANA (anti nuclear antibody) test had a very high titer demonstrating a nucleolar pattern. I wonder if there is any connection, although the hematologist says no. I am an otherwise healthy and active 50 year old with no other apparent symptoms.
I am very interested in the posts of you and Larry (does he post any more?) and I wonder if you had started that web page you mentioned in October about "things you can do to stop it before you end up with myeloma".
I'm also extremely interested in the holisitic protocol that your sister was on (B12 (sublingual), 7- Keto DHEA, & Vitamin K etc) and would love to have that list and know more about which things to try. Perhaps the list has been updated since October? I don't see any posts since then. Were there any things recommended to AVOID? I am so happy your sister is doing well!
I met a neuropharmacologist (MD with strong holistic beliefs) that strongly suggested Indole-3 Carbinol as well as turmeric. (tumor shrinking properties I think he said).
I would be thankful to hear from you and anyone else with stories, prevention regimes etc on those diagnosed with MGUS.
Thank you for your time and I apologize for the long post.
