Re: How to stop enemas and feel ok

Hi Taraweb, you are probably right that it will difficult or impossible to continue coffee enemas while in Egypt, but nevertheless I would recommend that you take along a few disposable enema bags just in case.

You are fortunate in that you have natural movements, but when traveling, due to time zone differences, dietary changes, travel delays, plus sometimes primitive or just dirty bathroom facilities, constipation is a common consequence. An enema using a litre or two of warmed bottled water (don't use tap water in Egypt!) may prove to be a very welcome assist if you become constipated.

While you won't be able to use Wilson's coffee, if you happen to spend a night at an international hotel, you may be able to order a carafe of American style coffee you could use as a less than perfect substitute, but at least better than nothing.

Also, depending on who you are traveling with on the boat cruise and your bathroom facilities, if the cruise company tends to get American or European tourists, you may be able to order a pot of coffee sent to your room and take a coffee enema, although those rooms and bathrooms tend to be miniscule in size as compared to American and even European standards.

I'll share a funny story about an enema on a trip I took to Greece during the late 1990's - it was after a wonderful 10 day visit during the Spring and the food was great and not at all constipating, and I did fine - that is until the very end.

We had to get to the airport in the early hours of the morning, only to find that our Olympic airlines flight was delayed indefinitely because of a strike. It turned out that at that time in Greece strikes were called without notice at the smallest grievance, and were just a part of the normal routine at the old Athens airport (since replaced by the one they built for the Olympics a few years ago).

The management staff manning the counter assured us that the flight would leave "soon" - meaning a few hours or so, and so on during a long day. We had rushed out of the hotel that morning without breakfast and I had no time to use the toilet, and the facilities at the airport left much to be desired. By the time the flight eventually took off, we had been waiting at the airport for over 18 hours and it had been nearly 3 days since I had a BM, and I was miserable.

To make a long story short, the plane was a 747 with relatively few passengers aboard, and at some point over the Atlantic they had turned all the lights off in the cabin and most people were sleeping and all was quiet. Finally, I got the courage to get my folding latex traveling enema bag kit out of my carry on and went into the bathroom, and gave myself an enema while sitting on the toilet and the bag hanging from a hook on the back of the door.

The relief I experienced afterwards was such that my memory of that enema is etched pleasantly into my mind. Previously when I had taken enemas while seated on the toilet all I remember is cramping and discomfort. This time I just anticipated relief while taking a full bag.

I was away from my seat for well more than a half hour, and nobody noticed. I immediately fell asleep afterwards and didn't awake until they began serving breakfast prior to landing in NY.

The image below is of a disposable enema bag you can order from your pharmacy or most medical or surgical suppliers. A cousin of mine ordered a half dozen of these from CVS last summer before leaving for a European vacation and they are surprisingly inexpensive and compact.

I hope you have a wonderful time on your Nile cruise, and please tell us all about it when you get back!

Sincerely, Valerie
