Does the smell of mold vary?

I know that mold traditionally has a "musty" or "mildewy" smell. We had a leak in our bathroom (and believe it had existed for a long time before we moved in) and we got a very strong odor that did not resemble the traditional smell. The odor is more like an overpowering perfume, or perhaps a bug spray. The odor dissipated quite a bit after the wetness dried, but it is still there. I can see a dark shadowy area that I believe to be mold underneath the linoleum. We have had a lot of health problems (respiratory and sinus) and wonder if it could be mold even though the smell is not "moldy". Does anyone know of other mold smells, or if particular smells are associated with particular kinds of mold? Also, if existing mold is exposed to moisture, does it cause a significant increase in the strength of the smell?
