I have been making kefir for about 3 months now. I'm using grains that were passed to me by a friend. The first 2 months or so the kefir was wonderful - smelled fresh and yeasty the way it should - and was nice & creamy after 24 hours on the counter.
However, this last month the kefir started smelling a little like vinegar. It has now gotten much worse and today my kefir smells like bile - I guess that's the acid?
My routine with my kefir grains is to make the kefir, drain it, put the kefir grains in a jar in the fridge with milk to cover. I use raw whole milk. I use the same jar with the same milk for about a week (in the fridge to hold the grains when not making kefir.) Then I scoop a few of the grains out of this jar to make kefir each day. The grains are growing fine, but this smell is just getting worse and worse. I'm wasting my good raw milk because I cannot imagine drinking this kefir that smells like vomit.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me. I'm to the point that I just want to chunk my grains!
