Irlen syndrome and Irlen lenses - helpful or just hype?

I just want to know who on here has, or has used, or has family members who use, Irlen lenses to help with visual and sensory processing in the context of helping with functioning in day to day life with visual processing, reading etc if you or a loved one has an autistic spectrum condition or Asperger Syndrome?

Did you find that they help you, or have helped you / your family member in the past, or were they an expensive waste of money or even worse may have hindered / harmed you in some way?

How have the glasses helped? Do you think they are worth it?

I need to update mine as they are now out of date, although it isn't critical yet. I had one bad expereince with someone also trying to sell me herbal health products to get more commission for themselves, or so I believe, so changed practitioner to the head office in Bury St Edmunds in the UK. I have also been bitten a few times and all that so I would be grateful for your views...
