Compression stockings and supports for hypotension
I was diagnosed with hypotension 2 years ago at a hospital. Symptoms include orthostatic intolerance, alternating fatigue and hyperactivity and seizures when exposed to allergens and other substances that cause a drop in my blood pressure.
One alternative to medications (or an adjunct with medication) is compression stockings to raise blood pressure. The stockings are expensive (around $50 or more a pair) and I don't see this alternative listed very often as a treatment for hypotension. The elastic wears out over time, and replacement costs can add up quickly.
If you don't need full-leg compression, cheaper substitutes for compression stockings include elastic bandages, neoprene thigh supports and neoprene waist trimmers. I use the widest elastic bandages I can find (3 inches) and wrap both my thighs. These cost about $6 each at Walmart. Neoprene thigh supports can apply even more pressure and will stay on better when you are active. They come in different sizes and are sold in sporting good stores for about $10 to $20 a pair. My favorite for active wear is the neoprene waist trimmer because it won't slip off. These are adjustable with a velcro strap or a zipper. Also sold in sporting goods stores for around $10 to $20.
Other alternatives to compression stockings are compression underwear and body shapers. I've tried body shapers. They work but the fabric seems too shear to be durable. I worry that compression underwear isn't durable either.
By applying mechanical compression to my legs and abdomen, I find that I can control orthostatic intolerance and seizures without meds. Hope some of you find this info helpful.
