Paul,

I did a little research and have nothing substantial to add, but I would think the manufacture of the carbon may. You may shoot them an email.

I do know that citrus is a universal cleaner, but I have never heard of anyone smelling it emitting from a carbon filter.

Have you had someone else smell it? Is it possible you are sensitive to it?
