Re: i'm for the draft.

Hey guy,

I don't have much time to get into this, but I saw your post and wanted to post a quick response.

I'm an Air Force mom with two more boys who are thinking of going in. My son serves as a 1st Lt., 15 Air Wing, USAF at Hickham AFB in Honolulu, HI. What he does is classified. As an officer in the military, he tells me regularly that they do not want draftees in the program. The military is a volunteer organization now (as everyone knows), and the young men and women who join either as enlisted or as officers are high caliber people, for the most part. My son enjoys working with the enlisted men in his squadron. However, having to command unmotivated personnel is the pits and the officers don't want to do it. It's also very expensive to train and outfit new personnel, money Congress would basically have to pull out of a hat (yes, of course, they are doing that now). One other reason the officers don't want a draft is that they want as few females as possible in the military. A draft now/soon would mean that all girls/women 18+ would also get drafted. As sexist as it all sounds, men get distracted by women and don't perform their duties the same when there is a female in their unit.

I do completely agree with you that the military can whip an otherwise unmotivated young man into shape. It can also give him a healthy dose of finding out what's truly important in his life.

Just my 2 cents,

Donna
