Brussels - His catch-phrase was "Perhaps I will live to be 1000," but Flemish geriatric doctor Herman Le Compte has died at the age of 78, the Belgian media reported Friday. Le Compte, known across his native Flanders as the "Vitamin Doctor," became famous in the 1960s with a series of books and TV shows dedicated to health and ageing.

He grabbed the headlines with his claim that a treatment based on vitamins and yeast could prolong life, but also called for society to give the elderly a more active role - a call which is now being repeated across Europe as the population ages.

His flamboyant claims led to his expulsion from the Belgian medical association, which viewed them as unacceptable.

Le Compte died in his sleep of a heart attack on Thursday afternoon.
