Urinary Symptoms (pain and burning from herpes)
Hi Teri321,
I am really sorry that you are going through this right now. It is quite common to feel pain and burning sensations with a genital herpes outbreak, particularly when urinating.
To help relieve the pain, here are a few tips that might help:
- Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated: 2 liters per day is recommended.
- If the process is very painful: try peeing in a cool bath or while having a shower - this sounds silly but will actually help relieve the stinging.
- Salt Baths: Use a large cup or generous handful in a shallow bath and if possible use "Epsom Salts". You can get Epsom Salts from most supermarkets and pharmacies. This can be useful to clean, soothe and dry the sores.
- Apply Dynamiclear to any sores: this solution works amazingly fast to destroy the infection and begin healing. It is a "single dose" application, meaning you only apply it 1 x time per sore during any given outbreak.
- General Pain Relievers: Such as simple analgesics like aspirin and paracetamol.
- Loose Underwear: By wearing loose underclothes that are preferably cotton -- not nylon, or no underwear at all, you can help minimize discomfort and allow healing.
- Hairdryer: Set on the "cool" setting, a hairdryer can give instant cooling relief to painful sores.
- Ice: Can be soothing if wrapped in a towel and applied directly to the sores.
You can find more useful tips and explanations for these here.
The good news is that things will get better and there are excellent support services and treatments that can help if you need them along the way.
The first outbreak is almost always the worst because the body has not yet built up antibodies to defend itself against the herpes virus.
Some people never get a recurrence but if you do it is likely to be far more mild and to heal faster, as your body produces antibodies after a few weeks which help your body to cope with the virus and heal more efficiently.
Hang in there and stay strong. If you need support along the way try the Herpes and Cold Sores Support Forum or a local support group in your area (you will find links to these on the Support Forum above).
Warm regards,
