This device causes grief

My late sister (25 years old) had a Mirena inserted, after she had multiple laser treatments for severe endometriosis. Shortly after the insertion she became progressively agitated, had serious mood swings and developed depression.

As a professional track-and field athlete, she virtually never touched alcohol, yet after the Mirena insertion, started drinking heavily on occasions. For no apparent reason she suddenly got epileptic seizures. As an athlete, this was very difficult for her to adapt to and make peace with. She became another person....which we no longer really knew.

I began to get suspicious about the Mirena and did a literature search on the Mirena. To my shock the following side-effects were among those listed: aggression, mood swings, seizures, abdominal pain, ovarian cysts, hair loss, greasy hair, etc. My father contacted my sister’s OBGYN to discuss the side-effects of the Mirena and was then told by the OBGYN that he was not really aware of the side effects mentioned. Apparently he and other OBGYN's were inserting 100's of Mirena's.

On July 25, 2006; the Mirena was removed after my parents, sister and our specialist physician insisted on it. The OBGYN told my sister that should she develop endometriosis again, she would have to consider a hysterectomy (at age 25!!). On July 28, 2006; she started menstruating again, experiencing pain she had never experienced before. On the morning of July 30, 2006; I found my sister in her bedroom - she took her own life.

As a family we are more then ever convinced that the Mirena played a role in her death. So many women spoke to us after her death, in negative terms about the Mirena. A close friend of mine had to receive 3 months of fulltime psychiatric treatment, after her Mirena was removed. Another friend of the family has been forced into a premenopausal state at age 36! The stories go on and on.

Our family is going through agony and grief. Please spare your families the same type of grief and have this device removed from your bodies. Women and families all over the world do not deserve to go through agony for the sake of profits of multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies. Please take a stance with our family against this device.
