I think these moves, along with Lieberman's endorsement of McCain and Huckabee's out of nowhere ascension, among many others is all part of the chess game...

pulling people away from the opposition's (Paul's) camp.

Looking deeper at the reasons, and publicity behind the moves... it seems clear.
