I agree. Most people took an interest in this stunt for the "starvation" aspect, but I think the real challenge to him was the isolation.
Interestingly, if you explore all the links on that page, you will see he needed lip balm in the box to avoid chapped lips (he seems to have practised beforehand). I now find my lips are dry too, and I need to use lip balm.
