Re: Hair Loss after mirena?
I got my mirena removed 7/18/07 after three months of hellish side effects (severe anxiety/depression/fogginess/aches and pains/change in bowel habits, etc!). I have been "shedding" excessive amounts of hair since probably mid september and am starting to get scared. My hair is much thinner than it was. I ABSOLUTELY attribute this to mirena in one way or another. I had blood work done right before I had the mirena inserted and everything was normal so I don't think that it would be thyroid or anything like that. I don't really have any other symptoms besides a lot more vaginal discharge than before. I called my doctor about the discharge and she said as long as there is no itch or odor we don't fix it. She told me that my hormones are "raging". I had a baby last January so maybe that combined with coming off of the IUD could be causing my hormones to "rage", I don't know.
From what I have googled about hair loss it looks like I have the "Telogen Effluvium" type because they have white bulbs on the end where the root has died. This is supposedly the "best" kind to have because it usually grows back. It seems that I have new growth that is an
inch or two long around the front of my hair. I did notice some hair loss with the mirena too but I can't remember if it was this same kind or not.
The two things that may be affecting us is hair loss from either stress or hormone level drop. These sheds can last from 3 to 6 months and don't occur until 2-4 months after the issue happened so there is a delay! I am hoping that mine stops soon because I don't want to go back to the doctor! I don't read anything associating hair loss and stopping mirena but I read a lot about hair loss a couple of months after stopping the pill. Mirena is relatively new and most of the focus is on the side effects of currently having it and then people quit posting soon after. But if you are like me the mirena cause me a lot of stress and messed with my hormones so it could be either or both! I hope that all goes back to normal with you. It is just frustrating to STILL be thinking about Mirena and it's effects. I want to be done with it already and move on with my life and take care of my daughter without more worries :)
Good Luck and keep me posted :)
