Mom is 87, and was born and raised on an island where I could visit, by a ship that sailed once or twice a week, about 1945.
Mom's dad died when she was three, and Grandma raised four children on the proceeds of chickens and uncle's boyhood paper route...plus the help of a few family members who lived nearby.
There were no extras.
Grandma gave her children raw carrots to nibble, and raw pumpkin seeds.
The idea was that the carrots attracted parasites (like gangbusters!) to the digestive tract, where the pumpkin seeds finished them off.
Anyone know if this works? Maybe it's useful as an 'in-between'?
