Help please--possible cancer

hello there,

A good friend of mine just had a coloncopy and the found anormal inflammation and the biopsy was inconclusive. His blood test was Ok and now they want to do a stool test.
In case it won't be cancer, how likly is he to develop cancer?
What can he do to prevent that?
He's 50 years old and a former smoker. He quit smoking about 6 months ago because he had a heart attack.
