Re: Rest of the story or fairy tale?

Europeans themselves credit vaccination for eliminating polio in their region:

"Thanks to vaccination high contagious or life threatening infectious diseases have been eradicated, eliminated either are under control in EU. Nevertheless – with the only exception of smallpox that has been definitively eradicated - high immunization levels must be maintained to prevent diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, measles or even poliomyelitis to re-emerge, causing death and disability and burdening health care systems."

""Vaccines are a billion dollar industry, and there are at least a billion good reasons there why it's continued."

If the claims about financial windfalls were true, then pharmaceutical companies would be eager to produce vaccines. Instead, the number of firms making vaccines in the U.S. has fallen from 26 in recent decades to only 4 now (you may remember that we had to import flu vaccine from England a couple of years ago due to shortages). Profits are limited by regulatory and price controls and there are relatively few customers (mainly governments).

The success of vaccination is also a handicap. People have gotten complacent in the absence of epidemics. I suspect most of the antivaxers will change their tune when the next superflu or other killer virus emerges in the U.S. and other developed countries.
