The natural variety of active substances from plants can be classified into the following primary function groups:
The tanning agents (tannins): these are anti-inflammatory and antioxidative.
The vegetable dyes present in flowers, leaves and stalks (flavonoids): these support the immune functions and have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects.
The essential oils (scents and aromas, terpenes): these support the digestive functions and have purifying, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
PADMA BASIC and organically grown herbs
Some of the herbs are organically grown, while others are harvested from their natural environment. They are grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
Herbs Origins:
Columbine and golden cinquefoil are grown in Switzerland, according to organic farming principles. The other herbs come from different parts of Europe, India, and Central America.
Herb testing for contaminants prior to production
Before processing the raw materials are carefully tested for pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria and mold.
PADMA BASIC testing to ensure that it contains the correct amounts of the right herbs
The method used to test PADMA BASIC is commonly known as “chemical fingerprinting.” This technique is used to identify components in a product based on their chemical constituents, such as tannins, flavonoids, saponins, bitter principles, and alkaloids. Technologies used to perform chemical fingerprinting include: thin layer chromatography (TLC), high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography (GC).
Irradiation
No, neither PADMA BASIC nor any of the raw ingredients are irradiated when they are imported into the U.S.
Additives and Fillers
Before the herb mixture is pressed into tablets, small amounts of sorbital, silicon dioxide, and purified, distilled water are added. These ingredients are essential as tableting aids.
Sorbital and Padma Basic
Sorbital is a sweet substance that was first found in the ripe berries of the mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia). It occurs naturally in other berries and fruits as well. Sorbital is often used as a
Sugar substitute for diabetics.
In PADMA BASIC, sorbital is added as a binding agent to help the herb mixture stick together when pressed into tablets. Because of sorbital’s ability to attract moisture, the tablets dissolve easily in the stomach.
The purpose of silicon dioxide in PADMA BASIC
Silicon dioxide is a tableting agent. This ingredient helps ensure that the herb mixture remains free flowing during the tableting process and guarantees a homogenous end product.
Is the water used in the productions of the tablets chlorinated?
A very small amount of purified, pharmaceutical grade water is added to the ingredients before tableting. This water is purified by distillation and contains no chlorine.
Lactose and Gluten
PADMA BASIC is lactose-free and gluten-free.
The most important ingredients in PADMA BASIC
The ingredients of PADMA BASIC include key healthful natural components, such as polyphenols, bioflavonoids, and essential oils. These components work together to promote and maintain healthful vigor throughout the life cycles.
Ingredients that help enhance circulation
Research has shown that bioflavonoids, polyphenols, and other antioxidant substances can help promote healthy circulatory system structures and function. However, it is important to realize that it is not one specific ingredient, but the balanced combination and concentration of all the ingredients that contribute to PADMA BASIC’s overall benefits to the circulatory system.

Circulation and heart disease go far beyond elevated cholesterol and blood pressure. One of the hallmarks of cardiovascular and circulatory diseases is chronic inflammation. Western medicine and allopathic physicians are finally realizing that there are important components of circulatory and heart disease beyond elevated cholesterol and blood pressure.
Arteriosclerosis, one of the underlying mechanisms behind heart and circulatory diseases, is now properly understood as a multi-factorial condition. This broader set of influencing factors includes a list of elements that can interfere with proper circulation or cardiovascular health. They include:
1. Hyper-viscosity- “thickness of the blood”. This can be due to genetic tendency (25% of the population exhibits one or more “defects” such as elevated LP(a), PAI-1, or Homocysteine.) Hyper-viscosity can also be caused by life style, dietary habits and infections or other traumas.
2. Inflammation- the hallmark of every chronic illness including arteriosclerosis and cancer.
3. Infections and traumas
4. Inappropriate immune response.
5. Hyper lipidemia
6. Oxidative stress- causes peroxidation of LDL to its damaging form and causes DNA damage directly.
An important component that can expose us to cardiovascular and circulatory diseases as well as other chronic diseases is hyper viscosity, which is a pre-determined genetic tendency for “thickness of the blood”. In Tibetan Medicine, these conditions are treated by “cooling and regulating body heat”. These techniques reduce inflammation when our heat is too high, and promote a healthy, internally regulated inflammatory immune response when needed.
The most common pathological change that affects both the heart and the circulatory system is arterioscleroses. As the sides of the arteries get thicker and less flexible, the circulation through the lumen of the arteries is diminished with the end result being Myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), strokes, peripheral artery disease and others. Before visiting the issue from a medical and structural point of view, a more global and philosophical look at “blockages” in circulation is necessary.
The heart pumps blood that circulates throughout the body bringing nutrients and oxygen to the various tissues. It’s the blood that carries information from the “universe”, the outside world, to our tissues. We breathe air through the lungs, enriching our blood before returning it back to the left ventricle of the heart. The left ventricle contracts and blood then flows throughout our systems. The energy, information that was a part of the outside air is now carried by the blood throughout the body. We can look at the act of pumping blood from the heart to our system as blood flowing from our surroundings into the core tissues in our body. If everything is opened and free flowing, the circulatory system will work in a smooth manner. If the blood flows well, so will other aspects of our being such as our feelings, emotions, thoughts, etc.
When the arteries become narrowed and the blood does not flow as well, the blood tends to get “stuck. Chinese and Tibetan Medicine recognized these detrimental issues thousands of years ago. In Tibetan Medicine, these conditions are treated by “cooling and regulating body heat”. These techniques reduce inflammation when our heat is too high, and promote a healthy, internally regulated inflammatory immune response when needed. The regulatory principle that guides this balance is at the heart of holistic medicine, which sees the body and the person as a microcosm of nature and the larger environment. As we review these causative factors we quickly realize that these are the same factors which contribute to the pathogenesis (formation) of most of the chronic illnesses. If we can overcome these mechanisms, we will contribute to our longevity and well being.
Padma is a Tibetan based formula extensively researched for its benefits in cardiovascular and circulatory conditions. Its traditional applications are to cool and regulate the movement of wind and enhance the movement of bile.
How do they work in managing circulatory health?
These ostensibly esoteric terms translate into regulation of the inflammatory process, regulating blood viscosity and mitigating hyper viscosity. Padma’s published benefits cover a wide variety of health conditions and demonstrate how the underlying mechanism of hyper viscosity and inflammation are involved in so many health issues. Seeing the big picture can help in addressing multiple concerns at the same time. The genius of this ancient herbal formulation never ceases to amaze me. I’ve observed patients who use the formula on an ongoing basis enjoy gradual, gentle, and sustained benefits. Compared to a single agent drug or supplement that may give rapid but short-lived benefits, the advantages of this type of treatment come clearly into focus.
The issue of why a Tibetan longevity preparation effectively enhances our health can be understood from two viewpoints, the Tibetan and the Western model. The Padma preparation was originally conceived to exert its effects within the framework of Classical Tibetan Medicine. Within the Tibetan model, the three traditional functions ascribed to the Padma preparation are:
1. Padma is a cooling formula.
2. Padma enhances the movement of wind.
3. Padma vitalizes blood (a result of moving wind)
Within this medical framework, good health means maintaining a dynamic equilibrium of the universal elemental forces. Illness is a manifestation of imbalance. Therapeutic intervention in this holistic medical system aims at restoring balance by treating the cause of the imbalance and not just the symptoms that are manifest. The composition of the Padma preparation is typical of the gentle balanced approach of Tibetan Medicine.
Following this medical paradigm, the plants in Padma are selected for their cooling properties, and to stimulate the movement of wind. Other plants are included to support the main effect, while a third group is included to diminish any negative effects from the first two groups.
Cooling effect: Our body system, which is a reflection of our life style and culture in the West, tends to “heat up”. The excess heat is a result of running too fast and for too long without a break, a rest, a time to slow down and re group. Does this sound familiar? It’s the way most of us run our lives. Eating on the run, not sleeping enough, and eating foods which are too rich, are a few examples. What happens to our car if it runs too long and too fast without enough lubrication?. It heats up. And when it heats up, it will eventually crack and break down. In our body, the result of the heating process is inflammation. We know that inflammation is the hall mark of literally every chronic disease from cardiovascular diseases and cancer, to autoimmune diseases, infections, and many other ailments. Regulating inflammation will therefore have immense benefits on our health. As inflammation causes oxidative stress, such a formula will naturally have profound antioxidant value.
Enhancing the wind: A simplified way of understanding this concept is to view it as regulating the flow in the body. As things heat up they tend to get stickier and not move in a harmonious way. If we can regulate the movement, things don’t get as “stuck”. This stickiness can be translated in Western medicine to issues such as hyper-viscosity or thickness in the blood, and to diseases such as circulatory blockages and cancer.
Vitalizing blood: As the system cools down to a normal temperature or function level and it flows at a harmonious pace, the end result is naturally better circulation. This will again influence multiple systems from memory to cardiovascular health to circulatory health to immunity.
What is the body of research behind them?
The Padma preparation is an extensively researched botanical formulation that has bridged the gap between Classical Tibetan Medicine and the modern Western medical paradigm. With numerous published scientific papers spanning the last 30 years, the enduring popularity of this preparation among modern Western medical professionals can be attributed to its long history of safe use and its visible health enhancing properties.
Support of peripheral circulation.
In a double blind placebo controlled pilot study conducted in 1993, treatment with the Padma preparation over a four month period resulted in significantly increased pain-free walking distances in patients with stable intermittent claudication. (Angiology. 1993). This experiment was repeated in 1998 with the researchers finding both the improvement in pain-free walking distances, and also finding improved peripheral circulation as measured by exercise induced blood pressure changes at the ankle. (J. Vasc Invest 1998). It is believed that one of the mechanisms by which circulation is improved is through an increase in fibrinolytic activity. (Fibrinolysis 1994).
Peripheral Arterial Disease
In addition, a landmark Meta-analysis study just published in the current issue of Atherosclerosis, the International Journal for Research and Investigation and Related Diseases demonstrated the ability of a this Tibetan based herbal formula, to address peripheral artery disease. Padma Basic was extensively researched for its benefits in cardiovascular and circulatory conditions reducing the inflammatory process, regulating blood viscosity and mitigating hyper viscosity. The published benefits demonstrate how the underlying mechanisms of hyper viscosity and inflammation are involved in various health issues.
Maintenance of a healthy cardiovascular system.
Beyond the positive effects that improved circulation has on the entire cardiovascular system, the Padma preparation has shown additional effects that favor cardiovascular health. One such effect was reported in Phythotherapy Research in 1992. Researchers in this study found that the after 16 weeks of use, the Padma preparation normalized abnormal blood lipid parameters.
Support of a healthy immune system.
In one study by the Polish Academy of Sciences the Padma preparation was found to diminish the size of atherosclerotic plaques in experimentally induced rabbit atherosclerosis. The mechanism was believed to be through a normalization of the immune system. (Arch Immunol Ther Exp 1992).
Inflammation moderating and Antioxidant effects.
Modern research on plant compounds has shown us that the health enhancing effects provided by the Padma preparation for the circulatory and cardiovascular systems are due in part to the antioxidant effects of bioflavonoids and other polyphenols. These plant compounds help support the health of the arteries, and effect enzymes that allow for normal blood flow. Healthy arteries and blood flow are important for the supply of oxygen to the heart, to the extremities, and to all living systems. The antioxidant compounds in the Padma preparation also provide a beneficial effect on the composition of blood lipids, by protecting them from oxidation. In controlled studies, oxidation of serum lipids has been shown to contribute to the development of hardening of the arteries and other detrimental vascular effects.
Do they work well in conjunction with other supplements to enhance the overall effect?
Patients who use the formula on an ongoing basis enjoy gradual, gentle, and sustained benefits. To understand how the Padma preparation may achieve this effect from a pharmaceutical point of view, a brief examination of a few of the thousands of plant compounds present in this preparation is informative. The broad array of active substances can be classified into functional groups. For example:
• Tannins: Provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial effects.
• Polyphenols: Natural brightly colored plant pigments which support the immune system.
• Flavonoids: functions and healthy circulation and provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects.
• Essential Oils: Support digestion, and provide antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and immuno-stimulating effects.
While individual nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, or antioxidants are important for our health, the synergistic effects created by combining the botanicals in the Padma formula far exceed the benefits of the individual ingredients. This synergy is shown in both the health benefits of this preparation as well as in the duration of its health enhancing effects. As we move forward to better understand and research such ancient formulas, it is my belief and clinical experience that we need to respect and preserve their origin and traditional indications.
For retailers: Aside from suggesting supplements, what other lifestyle changes should retailers recommend for addressing circulatory health?
Chronic asymptomatic inflammation has been receiving wide spread attention in mainstream medicine. Inflammation represents heat. We know from basic physics that heat is a manifestation of an increase in kinetic movement. When we live a high-pace lifestyle with no time to relax, “cool”, re-hydrate and lubricate ourselves, the engine heats up. The problem is that heat and subsequent inflammation degrades our body through wear & tear, and oxidative stress. This is one of the primary mechanisms of the aging process and of degenerative diseases including cardiovascular, autoimmune, cancer and other diseases. Slowing down and making sure that we allow our body to cool, regulate and regenerate is a necessary preventative measure for a long and healthy life. Proper hydration, taking time to eat, adequate sleep, regular exercise (especially walking), meditation and relaxation, good diet and a supportive supplementation program will contribute to the achievement of this goal.
